March Madness @ ChickensUnraveled

March 3, 2025

March Is Here!

We woke up and suddenly it was March! It feels like just yesterday we were in December, with the holidays in full swing and the winter chill settling in. The girls still need to update their wall calendars, and I’m still writing February on everything! I can’t believe how quickly time is flying. It’s amazing how life can shift so rapidly from one season to another. Although I’m not quite ready for the start-of-the-month meetings or the bills that come with them, here we are facing another busy month!

We wrapped up basketball for the youngest on Friday night. The buzzer sounds and referee whistles can be quite overwhelming, especially for kids with sound sensitivities. It was a long 32 minutes watching her navigate through the noise, visibly distressed at times. However, she adhered to our family rule—start a season and finish it. This was a life lesson in perseverance; even if she chooses not to play again, completing the season showed her the importance of commitment.

This month is packed with activities! We’re heading to my aunt’s to help butcher our cow for the year, a tradition that connects us with family and the land. Additionally, we’ll get to meet my cousin’s new baby, which adds a joyful note to the busy schedule. I can’t wait to hold the little one and share in the happiness that comes with a new life. The anticipation of family gatherings always brings a smile to my face.

As if that weren’t enough, we’re also set to resume horseback riding! This is such a rewarding activity for the kids, allowing them to bond with the horses while learning responsibility and care. Alongside that, there are a few PTG activities lined up, such as parent-teacher conference meals, which provide an opportunity to connect with other parents and share experiences. My husband has a number of doctor appointments this month, which adds an extra layer of planning. Between all of these activities, we’ll also be tackling other random tasks that pop up, making March feel like a whirlwind of events.

Thankfully, we end the month with the start of Spring Break! I think we’ll all need it by the time April rolls around. A break to recharge will be essential after this busy month.

What I’m most excited about is redesigning our chicken coop. As the days grow warmer and things begin to thaw out, our chickens are becoming more active and vocal. We’ve come to realize they need a bigger run to roam around freely. The sooner we can get their new home together, the happier we’ll all be! I’m looking forward to the planning and building process, working alongside the girls as they learn about structure and care for our animals. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly as the weather warms up. If it takes longer than expected, we’ll be using plenty of horse pellets to dry out their current run while we wait! A little ingenuity goes a long way in making our farm work efficiently.
