One of the things that we aspire to do is own cows. We have enough land to do so, but don’t have any shelter for them-including zero trees on the property to shield them from any rain/snow/wind. Before we get cows, we want to have some place they could go and get out of the harsh elements. But I have an aunt who lives in an even more rural part of Ohio and she has a sheep farm…and some cows on that farm. For the past few years, we’ve bought half a cow from her and saved some money on our meat.
The half cow of meat feeds the four of us for about a year…yes we buy chicken and other meat from the store and the girls aren’t huge meat eaters yet-but literally half a cow–one whole years worth of meat. People may think that’s crazy, but it’s well worth the cost for us. And it’s way cheaper in the long wrong. Plus, it’s a guaranteed trip to see my aunt and uncle.
There’s almost always some baby lambs that are being cared for and bottle fed in the basement too…and this time my brave six year old held one! I love that she’s starting to get out of her comfort zone and do things that may seem scary! My five year old opened up more to her extended family and showed her ornery self. And of course, there were tractor rides!

In addition to all of these things, we had an early Easter dinner. It had been a long time since I had seen my Uncle and his family. We played UNO and other card games. We caught up on each other’s lives. We ate yummy food. It was a grand time–it reminded me of when we were little and mom, Gring, and Poppy were alive and we had family gatherings in the workshop all together. Everyone getting along and being a big happy family. I think we all decided we needed to do it again sooner rather than later.
